THE RAMONES

Credo che tutti, almeno una volta nella vita, abbiano sentito parlare dei Ramones e che tutti abbiano visto, indossata da qualche amico o da qualche musicista, la loro maglietta.

I Ramones

I Ramones sono uno dei più influenti gruppi punk rock statunitensi, formatisi a New York, nel Queens (a Forest Hill) nel 1974, precorrendo gruppi come Clash o Sex Pistols. 

Il gruppo inizia a farsi conoscere come The Ramones molto presto. Ogni membro del gruppo sceglie Ramone come cognome d'arte, al fine di dare un senso di maggior compattezza alla band, quasi ad essere veri fratelli senza avere realmente alcun legame di sangue. Nacquero così Joey Ramone (Jeffrey Ross Hyman), Johnny Ramone (John Cummings), Tommy Ramone (Tamàs Erdélyi) e Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Glenn Colvin).

Come successe anche ai Clash, l'identità del gruppo era rafforzata dal look, che divenne identico per tutti e che fu (ed è ancora) copiato da migliaia e migliaia di persone in tutto il mondo: giubbotti di pelle nera, jeans stracciati, t-shirt e scarpe da ginnastica (preferibilmente All Star).

Le capacità tecniche dei Ramones erano piuttosto limitate quindi suonarono sin da subito brani originali, scritti da loro stessi ed adatti ai loro limiti, con testi spesso autobiografici, oppure ironici, divertenti e privi di significati politici. Comunque, i Ramones rimangono uno dei gruppi più importanti e significativi della scena punk rock mondiale. 

Alla fine degli anni '70 il gruppo iniziò a farsi conoscere anche oltreoceano, in particolare in Inghilterra, dove saranno fonte d'ispirazione per gruppi come Clash, Sex Pistols, Buzzcocks e Pretenders.

Ecco come il leader dei Clash, Joe Strummer, descrisse in un'intervista i loro concerti:

 "Era come un'ondata di calore, un bombardamento costante di canzoni. Non riuscivi ad accendere una sigaretta tra la fine di un brano e l'inizio di un altro. Era incredibile".

The Ramones, Do You Remember Rock'nRoll Radio?

Furono proprio gli show dal vivo a determinare la fama mondiale della band. Tra il 1974 e il 1996 il gruppo si esibì in più di duemila concerti. 

Il 4 maggio del 1978 Tommy decise di lasciare il gruppo per dedicarsi unicamente al ruolo di produttore, poichè si sentiva troppo lontano dagli altri membri della band. A questo proposito, in un'intervista Dee Dee disse:

" Era fantastico per un ragazzo di ventun'anni andare al supermercato a comprarsi delle patate e gli ingredienti per farsi un hamburger per cena quando io ad esempio passavo il tempo a mangiare patatine fritte e droga".

The Ramones, I don't Want to Grow Up

Verrà sostituito alla batteria da Marky Ramone (Marc Bell), che la scorsa estate ho visto (finalmente) dal vivo con la sua band.

Nel 1980 il gruppo ebbe una specie di crisi d'identità: si stava assistendo ad un continuo cambio generazionale degli storici gruppi punk e solo i Clash erano sulla cresta dell'onda con il loro (meraviglioso) album London Calling.

Nel 1983 Marky fu allontanato dal gruppo, per colpa dei suoi gravi problemi con l'alcool, e fu sostituito da Richie Ramone (Richard Reinhardt). Quest'ultimo lasciò la band nel 1987 e per un brevissimo periodo fu sostituito da Elvis Ramone (Clem Burke), che era stato il batterista di Blondie. Ad agosto, infine, tornò Marky che continuò a suonare nel gruppo fino al loro scioglimento. 

Nel luglio del 1989 Dee Dee decise di abbandonare la band per dedicarsi alla musica rap, continuando comunque a scrivere canzoni per il suo gruppo storico. Venne sostituito da C.J. Ramone (Christopher Joseph Ward, che ho visto in concerto qualche giorno prima dello show di Marky), che però prima di diventare un membro della band a tutti gli effetti fu costretto a passare del tempo in prigione, poichè lasciò il corpo dei marines senza dare comunicazione ai suoi superiori.

The Ramones, I wanna Be Sedated

Il gruppo si sciolse nel 1996, con più di dieci album alle spalle. In quell'anno i Ramones tennero il loro ultimo concerto dal vivo al Palace di Los Angeles. Allo show parteciparono altri grandi nomi della musica mondiale, tra cui Lemmy Kilmister dei Motörhead, Tim Armstrong e Lars Frederiksen dei Rancid, Eddie Vedder dei Pearl Jam, Chris Cornell e Ben Shepherd dei Soundgarden e lo stesso Dee Dee Ramone.

Joey morì nel 2001, Dee Dee nel 2002 e Johnny nel 2004.
